the structure of the book
This book is a six-part summary of the events that started thousands of years ago culminating in the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and a recount of the authors’ expedition from the two sources (Gesh Abbay, Ethiopia and Jinja, Uganda) to the mouth of the Nile River in the Mediterranean Sea.

Excerpts from the Book
In this section parts of the book are narrated to give readers a heads up on what to expect.
The Nile: A Mysterious River
Africa’s greatest secret of all: the longest river in the world is one of the few that flow North; that floods Sudan and Egypt in the scorching heat of summer without a single drop of rain; that gave life to three of the world’s oldest civilizations; a meeting place for two of the oldest religions (Christianity from the Ethiopian highlands and Islam from the deserts of Sudan and Egypt).
The Nile Basin Expeditions
Several failed expeditions were made by world powers to discover the sources of the Blue and White Niles. The nature of the river, with its rapids and the fierce resistance of the upstream kingdom, made it difficult for expeditions to successfully explore the basin. By the late 1600s, both Spanish and British monarchs, as well as the French were supporting expeditions in search of new territories. That is the reason why written documentation about the explorations of the river are only three centuries old.
Ethiopian Leaders and the Nile River
Over the last 120 years Ethiopian emperors and leaders have tried to develop the Nile River Basin as part of their development efforts. Regardless of the external pressures they faced, each leader had contributed to different extents, by laying the foundation for the realization of the construction of the GERD dam.
