Pre-1800 Egypt and Ethiopia's Relationship

Chapter One covers the timeframe between the 1st and 15th centuries and discusses the relationship between Egypt and Ethiopia over the river as well as the 16th century Nile expeditions and explorations by the colonial powers.

 

 

 

Chapter 2 - 1800-1935 Modern Egypt and British Influence in the Region

Chapter Two  is devoted to three major events: the Muhammad Ali Dynasty (Khedivate) and their Influence on the Ethio-Egyptian relationship; the Berlin Conference and the scramble for Africa; and the British dominance in the region

 

 

 

Chapter 3 - 1945-1959 Shift in World Power and the Implications to the Region

Chapter Three  covers the end of World War II and the shift in world power from Great Britain to the Americans; the 1950’s Egyptian Revolution and its implication on the geo- and hydro- politics of the Nile River; and Sudan’s independence and its demand for a more equitable share of the Nile waters that led to the 1959 water agreement between Egypt and Sudan.

Chapter 4: 1960 -1999 Post Colonial Era Geo-Politics and Engagements by Riparian Countries

Chapter Four (1960 – 1990) covers events including the Cold War and its impact in the Nile region, the failed coup against the Ethiopian Government in 1960; the relationship between Ethiopia and Egypt through their six leaders (Nasser, Sadat, and Mubarak from Egypt and Emperor Haile Selassie, Mengistu Hailemariam, and Meles Zenawi from Ethiopia) who adopted different ­ideologies and affiliations with world powers.

Chapter 5: 1999-2010 - Negotations Leading to the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA)

Chapter Five (1999 – 2010) covers important events that shaped the riparian countries’ involvement in equitable water utilization discussions including the establishment of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the Cooperative Framework Agreement.

 

 

 

Chapter 7: 2018-2022 Ethiopia's Resilience Amid Sustained External Pressure Against the GERD Program

Chapter Seven (2018 – 2022), the last chapter in Part I, discusses the long negotiation between the three countries, the first, second, and third fillings of the reservoir, UN Security Council meetings on the topic of the Nile River, and the first power generation from the GERD.

 

 

 

Chapter 6: 2011-2017 GERD from Groundbreaking to Tri-Partite Negotations

Chapter Six (2011 – 2017) covers the Arab Spring, South Sudan’s independence, groundbreaking of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), and negotiations between the three countries on dam safety, quality, filling, and operation procedures.
