Book 4: The Nile in the Riparian Countries

Chapter 13: What Does the Nile River Mean to Ethiopia and Ethiopians

Ethiopia, Africa’s Water Tower, is the richest Nile Basin state in its water resources… Although the area of the drainage basin of these three tributaries (the Blue Nile, the Atbara and the Sobat) is about one eighth of the entire basin of the Nile, it provides about 84 percent of the water which reaches Aswan…The average contribution of a unit area of the basin of the Blue Nile is about 8 cubic meters per second, Atbara 4.5, and Sobat about 4 cubic meters per second respectively. The Average contribution of the same area of the Nile Basin as a whole is only about 0.86 cubic meters per second.

Chapter 14: Burundi, Rwanda, DR Congo, Tanzania

… Burundi’s hydrographical system originates in the Congo and Nile sub-basins. The Congo River’s hydrographical system comprises the Rusizi, Tanganyika, and Malagarazi sub-basins… Of the total 26,338 km2 surface area, 84% of Rwanda lies within the Nile basin. This is equivalent to 7.5% of the total Nile basin area…Of its total 2,345,410 km2 surface area, only 0.91% of the DRC territory lies within the Nile basin. This is equivalent to 0.7% of the total Nile basin area…9% of Lake Victoria, one of the sources of the Nile, lies within Tanzanian territory, and the Tanzanian rivers that flow into the lake make up approximately 61% of the long-term average river discharge into Lake Victoria’s catchment area.

Chapter 15: Kenya, Uganda, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan, Egypt

… Kenya is divided into five drainage systems, determined by the great Rift Valley which runs north to south…Almost all of Uganda (99.51%) is located within the Lake Victoria basin (the Nile basin). This is 7.5% of the total basin area, and Uganda is known as the source of the White Nile..21.11% of Eritrea lies within the Nile basin. This is 0.8% of the total basin area…99.7% of South Sudan lies within the Nile basin, 19.3% of the total basin area…74.90% of Sudan lies within the Nile basin. It is also comprises the largest share (1.3 million km2) of any country within the basin, 44.46% of the total basin area…30.34% of Egypt lies within the Nile basin, comprising 9.4% of the total basin area. Nile water is the main source of water for Egypt.
